Geothermal Energy Project

Geothermal Energy Project Update
Tuesday, March 11

Excavation activities will require the closure of sidewalks between Neilson Library and Washburn House through early May, as well as sidewalk closures accessing the lawn adjacent to College Hall, Pierce Hall and Lilly Hall beginning March 17 through early May. The northern portion of Dickinson Lot will be closed due to excavation from March 17 to early May. Upper College Lane is open to through traffic through March 16. Art Internship Funding: Elizabeth Schroeder Hoxie '69 Memorial Fund
Deadline: Monday, April 7

The Elizabeth Schroeder Hoxie ’69 Memorial Fund provides financial support for Department of Art majors and minors (sophomores and juniors only) who undertake a summer internship of approximately 35 hours of work per week. The award cannot be combined with the Praxis fund. To be considered for the prize, students must submit the names of two faculty member references, a letter of application, a current CV or resume, a copy of their transcript, and an itemized budget. Workshop: Georeferencing Historic Maps

Learn how to create digital maps from paper ones through a process called georeferencing. Participants will explore historic maps in Atlascope and gain practice georeferencing historic maps of Northampton using the AllMaps platform. River Valley Radical Futures: Co-creating Visions Beyond Capitalism

Celebrate the launch of an illustrated map depicting the Connecticut River Valley 100 years after the fall of capitalism. Created in collaboration with local groups—including mutual aid networks, worker cooperatives, and community land trusts—this map envisions a future these organizations are already working to build. Alix Gerber, Post-Graduate Fellow in Interdisciplinary Design Practices and CEEDS Faculty Fellow, will introduce the project and its foundations in participatory and speculative design. Following the introduction, on- and off-campus collaborators will engage in a reflective discussion about the rewards and challenges of collective future-making.

Joel Pitchon and Volcy Pelletier will perform Zoltán Kodály's Duo for violin and cello, Op. 7. This work is an emotionally charged example of Kodály's method of melding folk melodies with formal classical structure. It stands as one of the most important works for this combination of instruments.

Come get cozy and enjoy a hot, delicious vegetarian soup made by awesome student cooks while taking part in reflective, student-led discussions on spirituality and life! The Bodman Lounge is in the basement of the Helen Hills Hills Chapel and accessible via elevator from the rear of the building. Catholic Mass

Star Gazing
Thursday, March 13, 8:30 p.m., McConnell Hall Roof

The Astronomy Department will hold a stargazing open house on the McConnell roof, 8:30-9:30 p.m. Come see the Moon, Jupiter, Mars, and star clusters. All are welcome. Please dress warmly. SCSD Swimming & Diving Lessons
Tuesdays, March 25-April 22, 4:15-4:45 p.m. & 5-5:30 p, Dalton Swimming Pool

The Smith College Swimming & Diving team will be offering swimming and diving lessons for children grades K-9 during the Spring 2025 semester in the Dalton Pool on the campus of Smith College. Students will be divided into groups based on skill level and are taught by Smith College swimming and diving members. Lessons are on Tuesdays from March 25-April 22nd, 30 minutes long, and running from 4:15-4:45 or 5:00-5:30. Total fee is $125 for a total of five individual or small group lessons. CSC 109 Data Installation: Mapping Smithies’ Favorite Places

CSC 109: Communicating with Data presents a data installation in the Neilson Foyer mapping the Smith community's favorite places on campus. This is an interactive data installation that invites Smith community members to share their favorite places on campus. Community members are welcome to add their favorite places between Thursday 3/13 and Friday 3/28. There is a special event for the installation on Thursday 3/27 during which students will be presenting the data visualization.
